If you had a time machine, where and when would you go?

Category: Thoughtful Thursday
Welcome to the Thoughtful Thursday series, where I ask a thought-provoking question every week to inspire reflection and introspection. You can find more questions in this series by clicking here.

Today's Question:

If you could go back in time as an observer only, when and where would you go, and why?

There are so many places and periods I would love to experience, even if I were only a passive observer. There is so much we don't know about the world, and getting the opportunity to travel back in time to see these things first-hand would be so amazing! I can think of a few places right off the bat that would be interesting to see. Most notably, I think I'd have to go see the Hill of Tara and Newgrange. I'd also like visit my ancestors who emigrated to the United States. I don't know much about them, but it would be fascinating to see how they lived and learn why they felt like they needed to leave Ireland.

The Hill of Tara
The Hill of Tara plays a large role in Irish mythology and history. I would love to see this area at its prime when it was used for inaugurations and rituals. This means going back thousands of years, of course. The oldest monument at the Hill of Tara is the Mound of Hostages, estimated to have been built in 3200 BCE. To see how the ancient people built these places, and why, would lend so much to the world in ways of knowledge. On a personal note, it would be validating for me to see these normal people living out their lives and being pagan all at the same time.

Newgrange
Another ancient site in Ireland, Newgrange isn't quite as hold as the Hill of Tara. Another Neolithic site that holds significance in Irish culture and pagan practice, it is thought to be significant as a religious site. Of course, no one truly knows. If I could go back and observe, though, I would sure learn! I would really love to step foot into the inner chamber during Winter Solstice when the first rays of the sun shine right through the site.

My Ancestors
I don't know much about my ancestors who left Ireland, and I've always wondered why they had to leave. I'd like to go back to when those decisions were made, I think. It would be fascinating to see before then, of course, but I think understanding what drove them to their decision would help me connect with them on a deeper level.

Thoughtful Thursday is meant to be inspiring, thought-provoking, and reflective.
