It’s The Little Things – Thoughtful Thursday

Welcome to the Thoughtful Thursday series, where I ask a thought-provoking question every week to inspire reflection and introspection. You can find more questions in this series by clicking here!

Today’s Question
What common things do you notice every day, but take for granted?

This question was actually inspired by these little clovers that were all over the disc golf field one day. Literally thousands of them – I couldn’t walk anywhere without risking stepping on them. I didn’t take the picture until we were done, but I noticed them and the smells of the rest of the forest the entire time we played. Our usual disc golf place is a combination of open spaces and wooded areas, so there’s always something new to see, hear, or smell.

So, my answer for today is just that — the small things in nature that I would normally miss if I were too occupied with work, my phone, or anything else. It’s in the still moments where I can really pause and listen, being present in the space rather than constantly on the move, whether mentally or physically. Walking through the fields and smelling the scent of the flowers in the air was a truly magical experience. In the city — heck, even in my own backyard! — that doesn’t really happen. But guess what?! It actually does!

It’s really easy for me to think that I can’t find a moment of peace or wonder in the busy life I lead. If I’m being honest, though, that’s entirely my fault. If I lose sight of the mindfulness I want to cultivate for myself, I lose sight of everything else around me, too. I even avoid going in my own backyard right now for several reasons, all having to do with the world around me and not my actual backyard. I live on a busy street, so there’s always street noise (unless it’s way too early or way too late). The previous owners of our house didn’t care for the yard well, so it’s just dirt and weeds right now. They left a huge pile of decaying leaves and branches in the middle of the yard that we’ve been cleaning up since we moved in — and let me tell you, just because it’s decaying plant matter doesn’t mean it doesn’t smell horribly!

I notice the flowers, the little butterflies that I have to keep my dog from chasing, the birds that make the trees in my backyard their home, and even the ones that continue to wake me up at 4 in the morning — but I take them for granted. They’re always there, you know? I see them every day, I hear them, but eventually they all just blend in with the rest of the world like a blurry picture.

The good thing is that I’m fully aware of this – that means I can change it.

Thoughtful Thursday is meant to be inspiring, thought-provoking, and reflective.
