Witchcraft For Uncertain Times – Spells & Ideas For Calming The Chaos
As humans, we face a lot of uncertainty in our lives. From large-scale things such as climate change to small-scale personal life changes, there is a lot we don’t have control over. When we go through difficult situations, it can often feel like everything around us is actively working against us. Emotions can run erratically, dipping from high to low based on your environment. Entire communities can be affected, and energy can transform from helpful to harmful fairly quickly.
In this blog post, I want to share some things we as witches can do to help ourselves and our communities when things get difficult.
Approach With Caution
No matter what you’re facing, it is important that you approach your witchcraft with caution, especially if energies and emotions are chaotic or unstable. You shouldn’t use any of these practices as a way to bypass your emotions or avoid making decisions. Emotional maturity and control are important, and while difficult situations can make us feel a variety of emotions, working through those emotions is vital to living a healthy life.
These methods are also not an excuse to ignore what’s going on in the world. Working magic for your benefit or your community’s benefit is a wonderful and noble use of your energy. However, working magic shouldn’t be the only thing you’re doing. If you are able, you should also be placing your physical and mundane actions behind your spells. Magic without adequate action is just not going to be as effective. Remember that action can be many things, too. Phone calls, emails, and spreading the word are all adequate actions.
Emotional Release Candle Spell
I first shared this spell on Instagram back when I had an account. This spell goes hand-in-hand with a therapy technique I was taught. It was originally meant to help with the negative and repetitive thoughts I get when I’m having an anxiety attack or depressive episode. I’ve adapted it for use when I am emotionally overwhelmed, too. This spell isn’t meant to remove your emotions about a situation. Instead, it is meant to help calm your mind and ease the emotional turmoil caused by feeling overwhelmed. You can also use it when you’re not sure what to do or how you feel, choosing to use the candle to help you focus and ground yourself.

You will need…
- a candle
- a lighter or matches
- Hold the candle over your chest or wherever you physically feel your emotions.
- Inhale and speak or think about what you’re struggling with or the emotions you feel.
- Exhale and push the emotional energy from those thoughts and emotions into the candle.
- Continue the above process until you feel that enough energy has been transferred to the candle and your emotional energy has calmed.
- Burn the candle and let the emotional energy dissipate with the flame.
Helpful Meditations – Anxiety, Anger, and More
If there’s one thing meditation is really good at, it’s creating a space for mindfulness and healing. While it’s not the only thing that should be done, it is one of the simplest things a witch can do. Even if you only have five minutes, taking the time to sit down and calm your mind can help you focus and get clear on what you need to do. Meditations can also help guide you through difficult emotions, gain mental clarity, or calm tumultuous energies.
You can find many guided meditations for free on YouTube. I have a playlist for that here. Insight Timer is a free app you can download. The important thing is to find a method that works for you. As a shameless plug, I also have an audiobook I wrote and recorded that has 10 different guided meditations in it for a variety of reasons.
Community Support Spells
Remember that if you’re having a tough time, your community might be struggling, too! Communities can be large groups of people, small groups of friends, or your close family. Witchcraft isn’t just about doing prosperity work, love spells, or money rituals for yourself. If you have the capability, helping your community is usually the right thing to do. You can cast healing spells for others, encourage prosperity for your neighborhood, and do some kitchen witchcraft to help your sick neighbor.
We can get in our heads about what we’re feeling, but empathy and compassion are quality traits to show others that you care. We can make the world a better place if we treat those around us with kindness and compassion.

Targeted Spellwork
General spells and practices are great, but if you have something specific that needs to be done, performing targeted spells is the way to go. This goes for protection, healing, curses, and so much more. It’s okay to target your spells if you need to, even if you’re targeting them at yourself or someone close to you. This can help things get moving in the direction you need them to go. Some witches work on a grand scale, weaving magic for things they may not have much control over. Then, on a smaller scale, they may work magic in their own lives or perform more mundane actions so they have a bit of control over their lives.
There’s Always More
Just because something isn’t listed here doesn’t mean you can’t do it during difficult times. As long as what you’re doing is healthy and helpful, feel free to do what you can to get you through any moment that is hard for you or your community!
